Glossary

Acrylic

Fiber produced from a synthetic material obtained by synthesizing a chemical compound, acrylic.

Armor

The type of weaving, the interlacing of warp and weft threads. A fabric has different properties (appearance and feel) depending on its weave type: plain, twill, and satin.

Bumblebee

An embroidery stitch that creates a raised effect on the fabric.

  • Close-shaved satin stitch: satin stitch closely shaved by a special machine.
  • Wadded satin stitch: a strand is inserted under the satin stitch to give it more relief.
To create this type of satin stitch, 5 cones of thread and 1 cone for the bobbin are needed.
  • Traditional satin stitch: simple satin stitch with a classic finish.
Bottle or Chimney

Fabric flap at the foot of the duvet cover that is tucked under the mattress.

Quilting

Bedspread made of two fine cotton fabrics needle-worked by embroidering patterns highlighted by padding.

Warp and Weft

Warp threads are stretched on the loom along the length of the fabric, while weft threads run across the width, passing alternately over and under the warp threads.

Chambray

Cotton fabric with a mottled look: colored threads and ecru threads intertwine, creating this textured effect.

Contextualization

Number of threads per square centimeter of a fabric. Generally, the higher the thread count, the better the quality.
For cotton bed linen, the standard thread count is 57 threads/cm2, i.e., 30/27, which means 30 warp threads per cm and 27 weft threads.

Cotton

Textile fiber made from the silky filaments that surround cotton seeds. Comfortable, supple and soft fabrics. The longer the fibers, the stronger the yarn and the silkier the fabric to the touch. This is why, at Tradition des Vosges, we almost exclusively use long fibers.

57-thread count cotton

Quality fabric, standard bedding. 57 threads per square centimeter

Combed cotton

Combing is an operation that eliminates short fibers (usually 15 to 20%) to leave only long fibers. Combed cotton yarns are used to weave high-quality fabrics that are stronger and softer to the touch.

Velvet cotton

Soft and fluffy fabric. Ideal for a comfortable and pleasant-to-wear bathrobe.

Flannel

The cotton is lightly brushed, which gives the fabric a very soft feel. Flannel bed linen is particularly popular in winter.

Digital printing

Innovative technique enabling the printing of highly detailed images on textiles with unmatched accuracy and quality.

Jacquard

Fabric made on the loom of the same name. This loom allows for the creation of complex patterns, visible on both the front and back sides

Lin

Plant fibre extracted from the flax stem, which yields fabrics of great fineness, very pleasant and light. Naturally brown, flax fibre is treated to achieve subtle colours.

Type of fabric

Modal is a fiber extracted from wood cellulose (beech). This material is similar to viscose. It is soft, supple, silky, absorbent, and very comfortable.

Mohair

Mohair is a natural fiber from the hair of the Angora goat from Asia Minor. An excellent thermal insulator, mohair wool provides warmth in winter and coolness when summers are humid.

100% cotton fleece

Soft, warm, and fluffy cotton fabric. Primarily used for bedding protection.

Honeycomb

Highly absorbent fabric with a honeycomb-like texture, reminiscent of beeswax cells.

Hem

Fold sewn along the edge of a fabric.

  • Plain or "topstitched" hem: thread that "runs" all around the item. Stitching with 4 to 5 stitches per cm².
Cladding

A piece of fabric finishing off bed or table linen, often in a different colour, which provides contrast, making a colour stand out. It is possible to define the facing with bias binding.

Hand-off

Special manufacturing that only concerns duvet covers. Makes it much easier to slide the duvet in.

Cotton percale

We speak of percale when there are 80 threads (or more) per square centimeter. The resulting fabric is soft, fine, light, and supple.

Polyester

Fiber produced from a synthetic material obtained by the synthesis of chemical compounds, polyesters. Known for its strength and flexibility.

Combed cotton sateen

A weaving operation on combed cotton fiber that gives a shiny effect on the face and a matte effect on the back. The resulting fabric is incomparably soft and light.

Silk

Silk thread, of animal origin, comes from the cocoon spun by the silkworm. A noble material known for its softness, shine, flexibility, and comfort.

Overcasting

A tight stitch that prevents fabric from fraying, particularly at the end of a duvet cover, for finishing a fitted sheet's hem, etc.

Pillowcase

Fabric used as a cover for pillows, bolsters, duvets. At Tradition des Vosges, we offer 3 different finishes for pillowcases:

  • Pillowcase with simple stitched flange: Pillowcase with a single seam all around (flat flange).
  • Double-sided pillowcase with stitched flange: Presentable on both sides as there is a flap on each side, inside the pillowcase, to hold the pillow in place.
  • Pillowcase with gathered flange: Pillowcase with a more or less gathered flange added all around;
  • Bag pillowcase: There is no flange. This type of pillowcase is mainly used in hotels and for bedding protection.
